Learning Quests for Gifted Students - Middle Primary

ISBN: 1-877390-50-X
Author: Debbie Smith

A series of three resources containing activities that:

  • Are prefaced with explanatory notes for teachers
  • Require students to research and consider all sides of a current issue
  • Allow students to develop the skills of critique and compassion
  • Let students monitor and assess their own learning in consultation with their teacher
  • Encompass a wide range of thinking skills and learning styles

Gifted students often complain of having to labour over work they already know or that they find insufficiently challenging. Rather than just sending these young people off to do supposed "extension" work, teachers need to deliberately engage them in their learning. Right from the beginning of a unit of work, gifted students should be able to do alternative activities if they can demonstrate their proficiency in the learning objectives of that piece of work. Teachers also need to be aware that while they might plan reading, writing and mathematical activities in ways that cater for the individual needs of their students, they often do not apply the same premise to "interest topics", which are areas of learning that gifted students are generally passionate about. The Learning Quests for Gifted Students series of books have been written with these needs in mind.

The three resources, respectively directed at students in the junior, middle, and senior primary school, each offer several units of work, accompanied by teacher notes. Each unit comprises a Learning Quest - a topic of current interest. The Quests vary in the types of activities required of students. Some, for example, call for gathering and understanding facts; others for analysis and debate. All develop skills that students can apply to various areas of the curriculum.
